\nForbes: Japan To Release Radioactive Fukushima Water Into Ocean<\/a>
\nThe new Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, is facing additional international pressure over the weekend, amid reports that Japan will be accelerating plans to dump millions of gallons of radioactive water directly into the ocean. Over 1.2 million tons of radioactive cooling water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant will be released. While the water will be treated, it will still be radioactive. 170 tons of new radioactive wastewater is generated each day.

\n9 years on from Japan’s worst nuclear disaster. The 1.23 million metric tons of water stored at the plant — scene of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster — contains “dangerous” levels of the radioactive isotope carbon-14 and other “hazardous” radionuclides, which it says will have “serious long-term consequences. In a report released Friday, Greenpeace said the water, in addition to radioactive isotope tritium, contains radioactive isotope carbon-14, which is “major contributor to collective human radiation dose and has the potential to damage human DNA.”

\nBut local fishermen say move will destroy their industry. Neighbouring South Korea, which still bans seafood imports from the region, has repeatedly voiced concern, claiming that discharging the water represented a \u201dgrave threat\u201d to the marine environment.

\nThe Guardian: Contaminated water that will reportedly be released into the sea from the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant<\/a> contains a radioactive substance that has the potential to damage human DNA, a Greenpeace investigation has said.

\n\nThe environmental group claims the 1.23m tonnes of water stored in more than 1,000 tanks at the plant contains \u201cdangerous\u201d levels of the radioactive isotope carbon-14, in addition to quantities of tritium that have already been widely reported.

\n\nRadioactive Carbon-14 has a half life of 5,370 years and becomes “incorporated into all living matter” (Greenpeace Japan and Greenpeace East Asia). “Dangerous” levels of carbon-14 exist in water that could soon be released into Pacific ocean.
