\nState Senate President Stephen Sweeney, one of New Jersey’s most powerful Democrats, has lost his re-election bid to a little-known trucker.

\n\nThe results had Sweeney trailing Durr by about 2,000 votes. Durr on Thursday pushed back on an oft-repeated storyline that his campaign spent less than $200 to unseat the senate president. Durr says he spent somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 in the campaign. An Oct. 26 filing with the state’s Election Law Enforcement Commission shows a $153 expense for the 3rd District Republicans’ joint campaign, covering the cost of food for poll workers and campaign literature.

\nTRENTON, N.J. \u2014 New Jersey’s longtime state Senate president, Democrat Steve Sweeney lost reelection. Edward Durr, a furniture company truck driver and first-time officeholder, defeated Sweeney in New Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District, according to results tallied Thursday.\n\n“I joked with people and I said, ‘I’m going to shock the world, I’m going to beat this man,'” Durr said Wednesday afternoon. “I was saying it, but really kind of joking. Because what chance did a person like me really stand against this man? He’s literally the second-most powerful person in the state of New Jersey.”
