shall we declare 2012 International Year of the Oceans

save our oceans, save civilization

UN: "Year of Forests 2011 - forests provide shelter to people and habitat to biodiversity; are a source of food, medicine and clean water; and play a vital role in maintaining a stable global climate and environment. All of these elements taken together reinforce the message that forests are vital to the survival and well being of people everywhere, all 7 billion of us."

Publisher’s note: To save our oceans is to save civilization. Shall we dedicate another year to our blue seas – International Year of Ocean 2012? "Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. Every drop of water we drink connects us to Nature, especially the ocean. The ocean is not just water, it’s alive, and it’s our life support system. Oceans provide more than half of the oxygen we breathe."

(quote)

The International Year of Forests 2011 logo is designed to convey the theme of “Forests for People” celebrating the central role of people in the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of our world’s forests. The iconographic elements in the design depict some of the multiple values of forests and the need for a 360 degree perspective: forests provide shelter to people and habitat to biodiversity; are a source of food, medicine and clean water; and play a vital role in maintaining a stable global climate and environment. All of these elements taken together reinforce the message that forests are vital to the survival and well being of people everywhere, all 7 billion of us.

The logo was originally made available in all 6 UN official languages, and has since been translated into over 40 local languages including Armenian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Kyrgyz, Latvian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Slovenian, Swedish, Swahili Swedish, and Turkish. If you would like to receive a copy of the other (local) language versions please email the UNFF Secretariat. If you wish to translate the logo in your local language, please send the translated text in a .eps file to forests@un.org, and the UN Department of Public Information's Graphic Design team will create a translated version of the logo.

International Year of Forests 2011 is a golden opportunity, to center everyone’s thoughts on the beauty, benefits and necessity of forest protection, enhancement and reforestation of our planet. Dr. Richard St. Barbe-Baker, “Planting and growing increasing quantities of trees is the scientific solution to Earth’s environmental dilemma.”

"SOS Amazon": every second we lose 1.5 acres of rainforests once covering 14% of earth land surface, now a mere 6%

"SOS Amazon": 1st action of Amazon tribes, sending message "Wake Up, World!" at 2009 World Social Forum in Brazil…seen and photographed from the air, sent the message "SOS Amazon" to the world, in the first action taken by indigenous people.

Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. Every drop of water we drink connects us to Nature, especially the ocean.
The ocean is not just water, it’s alive, and it’s our life support system. Oceans provide more than half of the oxygen we breathe.

Yet we do harm to our host; 90% of big fish are gone, 20% of coral reefs are gone...
Oceans cover 72% of earth and land covers 28% of earth -
12% of land is protected while less than 1% of oceans are protected...

International Year of Oceans 1998
The Ocean is vital to life on earth. From the life-giving rain that nourishes crops, to life-saving medicines; from the fish that come from the ocean floor, to the goods that are transported on the sea's surface - the ocean plays a role in your life in some way every day. In recognition of the importance of the marine environment, the United Nations declared 1998 the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO).

Distributer's note: To spare our seas is to spare human advancement. Should we commit an alternate year to our blue oceans – International Year of Ocean 2012? For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. Thanks.

We need to protect our nature as it is the only thing that can help us to survive happily... pollution, deforestation, industrialization has caused so much harm to the nature!

Extraterrestrial oceans may be composed of a wide range of elements and compounds. The only confirmed large stable bodies of extraterrestrial surface liquids are the lakes of Titan though there is evidence for the existence of oceans elsewhere in the Solar System. Thanks.

The explicit elements in the design portray some of the numerous values of forests and need a different perspective: forest offers protection to people and territory to biodiversity; are a source of food, remedy and water; and play a very important role in maintaining a steady comprehensive climate and environment. As important forests are to us, it is a scientific fact that the ocean actually generates more oxygen and converts more carbon dioxide than all forests combined. Still, this does not diminish the importance of forests, and I think both the forest and the ocean should be well respected and preserved.
