This Italian Airport Will Have A Vineyard On Its Roof
From their window seats, future visitors landing at the Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence (sometimes called Peretola Airport) will catch the view of a 19-acre vineyard gently sloping upward toward the new international terminal.
This remarkable feature will visually reflect Tuscany’s integral link to viticulture and winemaking. Tuscany, one of the premier wine regions in the world, is known for its prestigious wines—-including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Super Tuscans, and more. Coupled with the region’s culinary excellence, the region is a perennially popular destination for lovers of Italian foods and wines.
One of the unique features of the proposal is the 19-acre vineyard on the gently sloped roof of the structure, building upon the rich traditions of the Tuscan region. The 38 rows of productive vineyards interlock with longitudinal skylights that bring natural light into the public areas. According to the architects, a vintner from the region will be called to cultivate the vineyards, and the resulting wine will be crafted and aged in specially-designed cellars beneath the roof. The option of this type of green roof also contributes to the LEED Platinum sustainability rating sought by the designers.
