Northern lights (aurora borealis) seen around the world from largest geomagnetic storm in two decades
Northern Lights stun UK in spectacular display The Northern Lights have made a rare appearance across the UK, delighting sky watchers up and down the country. They could be seen after one of the strongest geomagnetic storms for years hit Earth, with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issuing a rare solar storm warning.
The extreme geomagnetic storm that happened on Friday was classed as the highest G5. Storms of this scale could potentially impact infrastructure, including satellites and the power grid, the NOAA warned. The last big G5 storm caused a power outage in Sweden, but there have been no reports of disruption so far.
There have been more occasions in the last year or so where we’ve had a weak showing of the aurora in southern parts of the UK. This is because in its 11 year solar cycle, we are approaching the ‘solar maximum’ where there are naturally more sunspots on the Sun’s surface. Sunspots are like huge volcanos erupting charged particles in Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s). With more of them at the moment, there’s a greater chance of more frequent and strong auroral activity.
